Mountainlair Plaza

After successfully completing the $1.2 million dollar garage restoration located beneath the plaza, CPS Construction Group was retained to repair and waterproof the Mountainlair plaza at West Virginia University.

Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Client: West Virginia University
Engineer: The Design Alliance
Contract Amount: $850,000
Completion Date: July, 2005

The repair work consisted of the following:

  • Partial-depth concrete floor repairs
  • Install custom expansion joints
  • Hot-applied waterproofing membrane installed on plaza deck and interior planters
  • Install drainage board and tapered insulation

In lieu of using heavy dirt to create the required topography for the landscaping - which would have added excessive dead load to the supported slab - CPS used more than 5,000 sheets of 60 psi insulation. The light-weight boards where glued together and built-up to a height of ten feet and gradually tapered to create the desired mountainous look. Soil and landscaping was placed over the insulation to create a beautiful garden roof.
